How to Stay Consistent

Even When Life Gets Busy

Let’s be honest: staying consistent sounds great, until life starts to get busy!

I talked last week about how this month had been smooth sailing so far, but knew that this week would be the true test of that!

Well, coming off of what should have been a 3 day trial, turned 4 day trial, with other pop-ups and pivots that weren't planned, I can say that yes: I still stayed consistent!

Short version of how I was able to stay consistent: by front loading, planning ahead, and using all the time I had!

It started from the weekend before, leading into the week ... Capitalizing off of cancelled and reset plans, that gave me time back in my day, and then putting it to work in a way that worked for me!

You're juggling multiple responsibilities, you want to be consistent, you want to stay consistent ... What does that look like for you to do this?

I know that for so many women, the word "consistency" gets tossed aside the moment things get “too busy.” I mean, isn't life always busy? We say that we'll do things when life slows down, but are we speaking to a specific thing that has caused life to "speed up" or just the general idea of things slowing down?

Well, here’s the truth:

👉🏾 It’s not that you’re incapable of consistency. You’re just missing the right systems to support you when life gets busy, which can then get messy.

I'm proof that consistency is still possible, even when it gets busy.

This week I was able to not only stay consistent, but I was also able to make sure that I was acting within my capacity.

Even the most motivated women can lose momentum.

Why We Fall Off Track

Our routines aren’t built around our actual life.

Spoiler: what worked in Q1 might not work in Q2. Just like what worked last week when you had nothing planned, won't work the week that you have back to back plans.

We plan based on hope, not strategy.

Spoiler: “I hope I get to it” is not a system, it's literally a hope, wish, not even a prayer. If you really want to get something done, you need to actually make a plan, which requires strategy and intentionality.

We're running on empty.

Spoiler: You can’t be consistent if you’re burned out. You're running on fumes and you won't take the necessary time to refuel and refocus.

We’re taught to hustle through the days and through life, but what you actually need is support, structure, and space to breathe.

May's Mental Health Awareness month. Earlier this week, we had a mental health presentation at work, and the presenter was talking about mental fatigue and how that plays into our mental health. When you think about all the things that we do during the day, the thought alone of these tasks can lead to mental overwhelm, mental anguish, and mental fatigue, let alone the act of doing it.

I was talking in my stories about how I was working to pivot and adjust my day, and someone commented back to the story "I'm stressed just thinking about it". This is a perfect example of the mental fatigue that comes from the thoughts and decisions that we have to make.

How to Stay Consistent

Maintaining momentum when life gets busy comes down to creating sustainable habits that stick.

1. Anchor in a Weekly Reset

Pick one day to pause, review your calendar, adjust expectations, reset your focus, and plan for the week ahead.

You'd be amazed how taking even 30 minutes to check your to do list, check your calendar, clear your head of all the thoughts, and planning out your week can create clarity for the entire week to come.

2. Plan with Your Energy in Mind

You aren't them and they aren't you, so don’t copy and paste someone else’s routine.

Instead, listen to your body and work to identify your high energy times and protect them for those high priority tasks that require focus, and use your low energy time for social media scrolls.

3. Simplify Your Priorities

You don’t need 10 goals each day.

You need 1–3 things each day that move you forward, and then expand those for the week, and give yourself permission to let go of the rest.
